You are to create a headline about the 2nd year digital classes in this program. The audience will be 1st year  students. Please provide the headline and your reasoning behind it. In addition, please outline what  information is missing in this question that you would need to create the headline. (4 Marks) 

10 ways to Dominate 2nd Year Digital Classes – Effective Tips from Previous Grads 

The headline above was made specifically to engage 1st year students. This was done in many ways to ensure that 1st reading of the headline would engage with it. 

The headline above contained useful information from credible sources. The information stated in the headline is how to easily go through the digital classes. From experience, first-year students are told firsthand during their classes and by other students how hard the 2nd year classes can be. 1st year is challenging in its own way and having to discover that the next semester is harder is a hard pill to swallow. With this in mind, knowing that first years will easily engage with this headline because it is inciting that the content in this headline will solve their problems. In this case, how to pass 2nd-year digital courses. 

Furthermore, I included “Effective tops from previous Grads” with a purpose. We discussed in class that creating a headline that provides support for the claim does well. Knowing this, I decided to attach to the headline “Effective tops from previous Grads.” Who better knows how to dominate 2-year digital courses than those who already passed those courses previously? As such, stating that previous grads had a say, gives more credibility and reason for 1st years to engage with my headline. 

The headline directly targets what 1st years are thinking about moving into 2nd year digital classes. The headline doesn’t directly tell them what to do but is more focused on helping them. The reason behind this decision is because as mentioned in class, headlines that are designed to help users perform significantly better than headlines that don’t. For example, also discussed in class, it was said that the Mashable post entitled, gained more than 1,500 shares — mainly because it addresses an issue owners of this cutting-edge device find relevant to their experience. Knowing that ideally 1st years want to move on in future semesters, this headline will be helping them out as it is going to assist them with their problem. Therefore, when they read my headline, they will be engaged.

My headline included numbers. The purpose behind using “10” in my headline is to boost its appeal and have users know what to expect with the headline. As discussed in class, headlines with numbers can help understand the content because just by reading it, they should get an idea of what to expect. In this case, 10 tips to pass 2nd year digital classes.  

To make this an effective headline there is some key information that I am missing from the question. One of them is the main audience. 1st year students are vague and don’t give me much room to work with. I don’t know their tastes, age range, interests and what program they are in. 1st year students are too broad of a demographic and I need more information such as what programs they’re interested in to create an effective headline. For instance, I am not sure if they’re students In Construction or in Police Foundations. Knowing that if they’re in the Advertising program or not will determine if they will be interested in my headline and the program.
